Getting Unstuck – The Magic of Perspective and Gratitude

A few years ago my life as I knew it fell apart.  I lost my job and marriage at the same time.  I felt inadequate as a wife, an employee, a mom, a friend, a sister and a daughter.  Everything I knew, everything that I identified with that helped me know who I was, was gone.  I felt myself slipping, falling, getting lost.  It was a place that was so unfamiliar to me that it scared me.  I questioned and doubted everything.  My light began to dim.  I felt alone, rejected, embarrassed, ashamed, sad, angry and hurt.

It was hard to see the good, the beauty and the love around me.  Instead, I saw the hard and the sad.

I knew, however, that this wasn’t a place I could stay in.  It was making me sick and literally killing me from the inside out.  Little by little I focused on finding the good, the beautiful and the light in each day.  It wasn’t easy.  My mind knew it was there and could see it, but I didn’t feel it.  But every day, I looked for things that I was grateful for and wrote a list out in my journal.  And every day that list grew.  And as that list grew, I began to FEEL all the good, the beautiful and light around me.  The more I felt it, the more I saw.  The more I saw and felt, the better I became.  New opportunities and paths presented themselves and I found a way out.  Out of the darkness.  Out from under the weight.  Out and up into the light I wanted and needed to be me again.

What we focus on is a choice.  What we focus on, we will find – be it positive or negative.  What we focus on creates the environment around us.  To this day, I choose to focus on the beautiful, the good, the miracles, the love, and the light, because I have focused on the opposite before and that did not work well for me.

We may feel stuck at times, but let me remind you that we are NEVER stuck.  There is always another way to see things.  Always a way to get “unstuck.”  It is not always easy, but it becomes easier the more we practice focusing on what is good, what is right, what is beautiful, what puts a smile on our face, and what we are grateful for.

Practice gratitude!  It will change your life. Every night before you go to bed, make a list of all the things you are grateful for from that day. Think of all the people who came into your day and made it brighter in some way.  Recall things you accomplished that day, even if it seems small.  It could be you got the laundry done and folded or that you unloaded the dishwasher.  What experiences did you have or witness that put a smile on your face? The more you focus on these things, the more you may find yourself seeking them throughout your day.  And as we know, “What you seek is seeking you.”  You will find what you are looking for, so make it good!

And also know that you are never alone.  There are many earthly angels in your life that would love nothing more than to help lift you up and remind you of the amazing and powerful human that you are.
